My two work besties and I met at 11.30am, along with Little Chef and cute as a button baby O. Since we all live in different directions, we met somewhere central – the newly opened Gooseberries, in Kensington. It’s in a little old building, opposite Kensington Primary School – just a stone’s throw from South Perth. I wish there was a café like this opposite Little Chef’s School. I’d be there every day!
It’s a lovely café and quite tardis-like. Inside, it’s far bigger than it looks from the road. Brightly cushioned chairs and prints hanging on the walls make it very inviting. The staff are lovely and told me they’d only been open about 12 weeks. They’re also awaiting a shiny new sign, to replace the graffiti style one they have at the mo.
Gooseberries is fabulous for children too. There is a dedicated playroom full of toys for the kids – of course you must supervise them in there. Little Chef enjoyed a play in there and drawing on the blackboard. We decided to sit in the astro-turfed garden outside, since it was sunny.
It was just about lunch time, but Mrs H and Mrs C both were feeling like something brunch-y was in order. Luckily Gooseberries do an all-day breakfast menu. The menu also features burgers, salads, sandwiches and has quite an Asian twist to it. We started with some freshly squeezed juices and coffee.
Ary’s Eggs Benedict ($19) Mrs C is gluten intolerant and though it wasn’t marked on the menu, they have gluten free bread available and there are plenty of GF options. She enjoyed the two poached eggs, crispy bacon, spinach, cherry tomatoes – covered in hollandaise sauce and thought the bacon was delish.
For a change, I felt like something “healthier”. Endlessly eating out wreaks havoc on the waistline.
Thai Beef Salad ($22) This plate full of mixed salad greens was hiding lots of warm slivers of fillet steak underneath. This is absolutely one of the tastiest salads I’ve had in a long time. Fresh lemongrass, coriander, ginger and mint, coupled with a spicy lime dressing made for a delicious lunch. (Also chicken option).
Unless I missed it, there isn’t a children’s menu. Perhaps one would be a good idea? There wasn’t too much that Little Chef would eat so I picked a freshly made carrot cupcake from the cabinet. Fussy five year old LC should have been chuffed with a cupcake for lunch (It’s ok it’S got veggies in!!). He was doing well till he spotted a tiny sliver of carrot and it was all over. Oh dear. I finished it off and it was a fine cupcake.
We all loved Gooseberries and the three of us will absolutely be back. I love it when I find a fantastic little café like this. Can’t wait to try some more of their fresh and tasty food very soon!
