It was my parents wedding anniversary recently. Usually, I don’t celebrate it with them (I think wedding anniversaries are a couples thing), but today was an EXTRA special day… I had been plotting a surprise!
One of my sisters (who lives in England) had let me in on her exciting news. She is coming to Perth for a holiday with her kids this December. I’m completely giddy with excitement, particularly as they have never made the big trip to Australia and my parents were going to be over the moon to hear the news! It’s been years since we saw them. So, I’d planned a Skype call after lunch, so my sister could tell them face to face!
Anyway, to our lunch!…
Being a special occasion, we picked Basq in Currambine, one of the best dining spots in our area. The modern European restaurant has a stylishly modern fit out and a buzzing atmosphere. It’s a very light and airy place, with high ceilings and huge open windows.
Styled as “tapas”, the menu has small share plates, as well as more substantial options for those who don’t like to share their food. The drinks menu at Basq will suit all tastes and there’s always room for a cheeky cocktail or two…
I’m still fairly new to all this gluten free lark, so I really appreciate when menu items are clearly marked with “GF”, so I don’t need to interpret each and every dish. Unfortunately, they don’t do this at Basq, though the wait staff were only too happy to help me and make suggestions. I chose the braised beef cheeks, the lush meat soft and lip-smackingly delicious. The gluten component swapped for roasted potatoes, which were crisp. Also on the plate were green beans, a parsnip puree, radish and pistachios.
My Dad tucked into his steak, which was very tasty and cooked perfectly medium, as requested. On the side were chips, dressed leaves and a creamy peppercorn sauce.
Little Chef was kept occupied by some colouring in. There are some taste bud tempting dishes on the kid’s menu. Little Chef gave his lunch the big thumbs up! The kid’s fish and chips is a generous serve. The fish is fresh and coated with a crisp golden batter, served with a pile of fries, a dressed salad and plenty of sauce.
Feeling full, we weren’t planning to indulge in dessert. The waitress had overheard that my parents were celebrating their anniversary and a complimentary dessert was sent out from the kitchen for us to share. What a lovely touch! My Mum almost cried, all the while I was thinking to myself “if you’re crying now over a dessert – just you wait!”. We all relished the scrumptious chocolate fudge brownie, ice cream and salted caramel.
The mod-rustic vibe matches the European tapas menu perfectly. Basq is the kind of restaurant that you’d usually find in the inner suburbs of Perth or Fremantle. It’s my go-to local restaurant for a quality family meal, pre movie eats or a special occasion.
PS… There were tears all round when my sister called on Skype! We can’t wait to show her and my nieces and nephew all around beautiful Perth next month 🙂 🙂
