Perth’s outer northern suburbs have grown incredibly quickly over the past few years. I’m not talking about my ‘hood (Joondalup), but the areas that lay much further away – north of Butler. Each time we take a drive up Marmion Avenue, there seems to be an endless sprawl of new housing estates. It’s taken a while for these areas to catch up in terms of hospitality offerings. This summer The Beach House opened in Jindalee, as well as The Amberton in Eglington, The Landing in Alkimos and another venue from 3 Sheets has opened its doors in Butler.
Found in the Eden Beach Estate, the modern architecturally designed building is striking, inside and out. This spot would not be out of place somewhere in the western suburbs, like City Beach. Lush plants fill the ocean-facing space, which has a large bar, high communal tables, an inside dining area (with table service) and a more casual alfresco area on the side, sheltered from the sea breeze.
We opted for a table with comfy benches the alfresco area, overlooking the ocean, wide open grassed area and huge kids’ playground (which Little Chef immediately spied). The menu is made up of the usual suspects – steak, parmi, risotto, a burger, as well as some interesting picks like a 2kg spiced lamb shoulder and Thai style Blue Spotted Emperor served whole. Share plates also feature heavily. I wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of quality, even a quick squiz at their social media gave no clues. So we crossed our fingers, and hoped for a delicious lunch.
For the glutards, like me, there’s a decent amount of gluten free dishes to pick from. I opted for a light pomegranate and spiced cauliflower salad, ($18) with an option to add chicken for an additional ($5). This was tasty, especially when the leafy herbs and rocket are mixed around, coating the leaves with creamy labne (hung yogurt).
Everyone else on the table ordered fish and chips ($26) – a kids portion ($10) for little chef, as well as beer battered and a grilled snapper. They all enjoyed their picks – complete with rustic fries, thick flaky fish, tartare sauce, and a nicely dressed side salad.
While we chose fairly simple dishes, we were all pleased with our lunch and the service was also friendly and efficient. The Beach House made a good first impression with all of us. And Little Chef loved the neighbouring playground. I was happy to note doggos are welcome in the alfresco area, and the venue is also open for breakfast, so another visit for a coffee and brunch is definitely on the cards.
