Taste Budds Cooking Classes

Taste Budds Cooking Studio, run by Chef Sophie Budd, is found in Highgate. Sophie has previously worked for popular British Chefs Rick Stein and Jamie Oliver. Predominantly, the cooking studio offers cooking classes for adults, catering, long table dinners, and during the school holidays Sophie runs her extremely popular cooking classes for children.

Little Chef was invited along for the “hands on” class for eight to twelve year olds. Considering he’s from a family of three Chefs, he doesn’t have many kitchen skills (whoops!). Hospitality is a hard industry to work in and we don’t want to push him into it! Saying that, being able to cook is an important life skill and it’s high time he learned how to peel a spud!

The class is run by Sophie, with help from Chef Brendon. The main focus of these classes is food preparation skills. Sophie’s passion for cooking is infectious. She’s really great with the kids in the class (usually about 12). Everybody warmed to her instantly and she managed to keep a friendly but authoritative rein on the class. Continue reading

{PERTHfect product} Cooking with Turban Chopsticks & a “Little Bites” giveaway!

IMG_8777Recently I received a package of goodies from the lovely Mei and Suresh at Turban Chopsticks – this was a very welcome delivery as I have been using their products for a while now and absolutely love their concept of easy to make, authentic foods inspired from their Indian and Asian backgrounds.

I like the idea of cooking, I used to love it years ago. For various reasons I don’t enjoy it so much anymore – being crazy busy juggling my job/Blog/Social Media Management and also Little Chef being a terribly fussy eater make it difficult to be adventurous. I am a “one pot” fan, loving something that’s no fuss and that I don’t have to think too much about. I usually whip up the Turban Chopsticks Biryani if I’m making a curry in my slow cooker – its packed full of hand roasted cashews, sultanas and I usually add some veggies into the mix too.IMG_9648 (2)

I also am really strict when it coms to “E Numbers” or artificial colours/flavours and preservatives. It’s hard to find convenience food without these and knowing the Turban Chopsticks range is 100% natural gives me peace of mind.IMG_9654 (2)

Cooking with a little help from Turban Chopsticks is perfect for me and my family’s needs. It’s wholesome – no nasties at all. A lot of the products are gluten free too. There is a little bit of cooking involved – enough to make me feel like I’m making an effort and not just shoving a frozen pizza in the oven!

IMG_8772The “Little Bites” range are perfect little morsels for picnics, party finger foods, BBQs etc And so easy to whip up! I tried the Onion Bhaji Mix, admittedly I got Chef to chop the onions (my eyes are very sensitive! haha). After that all I did was add the dry mix to the onion, stir in some water and a little chilli and coriander. Too easy!IMG_8773

I deep fried the mixture for a few minutes then – tah-dah!! Deliciously crisp bajis in under 10 minutes. Chef and I love to have sides with curry and when we make a curry at home we’ll often pop up the road to the local take away to get some onion bhaji. NOT ANYMORE! Turban chopsticks bhajis taste 100% authentic, they’re absolutely delicious!IMG_8787

Now, I don’t want to get all “sell-y”. That’s not a word, but you know what I mean. I’ll only promote products now and then on my blog and I will only do this if:

A) I totally love them and

B) they are a local company

Turban Chopsticks absolutely covers this criteria and you can find their packages in the Asian food section of specialty food stores and selected Coles, IGAs and Woolworths. You may even bump into Mei at various farmers markets, festivals or Perth’s Upmarket like I did. Find out your local stockists and much more at www.turbanchopsticks.com.auIMG_8789

Little Pantry – Subiaco

2013-10-03 12.32.03Little Pantry on Urbanspoon

We visited the Little Pantry on the border of Subiaco and Shenton Park, to grab a quick lunch. We were on our way to Kings Park and needed to top up our energy (and get a coffee buzz!). We’d heard that the coffee here is amongst the best in Perth – it certainly was very good. My Chai Latte was served in the traditional bowl, instead of a mug, so that made me smile 🙂

The baristas were very friendly and chatty, despite being run off their feet. The bustling small café was full of people walking in for takeaway coffees and lunch on the go.2013-10-03 12.49.37

We stopped a little while longer, sitting in the window. We liked  the friendly atmosphere a lot.Chef loved his Roast beef with pesto and mushroom toasted chibatta.IMG_1603

I had a very nice quiche of the day (antipasto). Little chef loved his first ham and cheese croissant ever. 2013-10-03 12.39.40

We found it a tad pricey, but it’s in the western suburbs – so one has to expect paying a few extra dollars I suppose 😉 Overall, we liked Little pantry and much preferred it to the mayhem of screaming kids at the Sticky beaks café (Kings Park)!! We came for the coffee, but discovered that Little Pantry is an all-round little gem!!lp
