One of Perth’s most highly regarded brunch spots is Sayers Sister, found on the quiet end of Lake Street, near to Hyde Park. The interior is gorgeous. It has a shabby chic feel, with elegant glass pendant lights and comfy high backed armchairs.IMG_0647

The Shore Café – Alkimos

Driving up Marmion Avenue, north of Butler, Perth’s urban sprawl seems to go on forever. We went for a drive around the new estates, as they have some fantastic playgrounds for Little Chef. We stumbled upon a new café at the Shorehaven Estate, in Alkimos, The Shore Café. The interior is quite cosy, with just 6 tables, but I can see it would be a wonderful place to dine alfresco in warmer weather. The café also has a small bar licence and is open for brunch, lunch and dinner.

The Shore Café sits in the sandy white dunes, much like a mirage. The mural covered eatery is right on the beach front, so has a beaut view of the ocean. We spotted the remains of the rusted Alkimos shipwreck, after which the suburb is named, poking out of the sea. The ship has a very interesting history including murders and buckets of bad luck – some say that it is haunted.img_0556

For lunch, Chef chose the Shore burger, $24. A thick and juicy beef Pattie is absolutely covered with melted cheese. The burger, which has to be held together by a knife, is brimming with bacon, beetroot relish, onion jam, aioli, lettuce, tomato and salad. There’s a side of chunky chips on the side.img_0546

I chose something a little more brunch-y. The wild mushrooms, $22. The mushrooms on toast/eggs benny hybrid hit the spot. Different varieties of mushrooms, along with wilted spinach sit on buttered toast. That’s all topped with a couple of perfectly runny poached eggs and creamy hollandaise, finished with truffle oil and shavings of pecorino cheese. I could definitely taste the truffle oil and its use was spot on. A few more drops and it would have been overpowering.img_0551

Little Chef chose a ham and pineapple pizza from the chiller cabinet, which he gave the thumbs up. The Shore Café has a good kids menu which includes “make your own tacos”. There’s a climbing frame next to the café for the kids to play on and loads of grassed areas.img_0544

With thousands of new homes in this area, inevitably there are thousands of residents, though so far the locals don’t have many dining options, other than taking a drive to Mindarie or Yanchep. Thankfully for them, the Shore Café is a little oasis in the outer northern suburbs. We’d definitely return if we’re ever out that way again.

I’m the first to admit that I’m totally clueless when it comes to dining in the southern suburbs. In my stomping grounds of Joondalup, the inner city areas of Perth, my “golden triangle” Post Newspaper region in the western suburbs, the Swan Valley and Perth Hills – I definitely have my finger on the foodie pulse. If I take a trip over the Narrows Bridge – I don’t have a bloody clue! I suppose that comes part and parcel with just how huge Perth’s sprawl has become.

A couple of my besties live SOR and I do love a catch up with them over a meal – finding a gem that’s close to them is a bonus. Last year I found a firm favourite – Rustico Tapas in Rockingham – I’m still looking forward to another visit there.

When catching up with the lovely Nays recently, we decided on brunch at a hot new café in the Canning Vale area. We met at Timber Café in Harrisdale, where we enjoyed a couple of juices and a natter, whilst we waited for our food.IMG_1424

The cafe has a rustic chic vibe, with a cool mural on the wall – just like something you’d find in Leederville or Mt Lawley. Though it’s right smack in the middle of suburbia. In my opinion there should be way more quality places like this in the outer areas of Perth, as frankly not everyone can be bothered to drive to the city!IMG_1423

Nays had the avocado bruschetta, $15. Though there wasn’t an abundance of avocado, it was still tasty and mixed with a corn and quinoa salad. There was also a poached egg sitting on top of the fresh sourdough and grape tomatoes and sharp radish on the side. Nays enjoyed her dish – especially as it didn’t come with a runny egg. A gooey egg is my idea of heaven, but not for Nays, the chef was more than happy to serve her egg “well done”.IMG_1426

I ordered the mushrooms on toast, $17.50. It was a medley of five types of mushrooms, which are absolutely mouth-watering as they’re sautéed in a herb chilli butter. The yummy morsels of mushroom are served on fresh sourdough with creamy goats curd, wild rocket, a sprinkling of dukkah and a runny soft poached egg. A fab dish!IMG_1430

All in all we both loved the chilled atmosphere and yummy food at Timber and if I lived in the Southern River/Harrisdale area I’d be stoked to have Timber as my local café.IMG_1435

 

Café 2TwentyFour – Belmont

One of the most talked about new cafés of the last few months is Café 2TwentyFour. It lured me in with the multitude of Instagram posts of MEGAshakes and drool-worthy brunch dishes. It’s found opposite Belmont Forum, which could have been an odd spot, but with Sapore just down the road, it’s not so out of place.IMG_1192

I met a couple of pal’s there for lunch – Kimee and Kez – with their baby daughters in tow. Though it’s a fairly small café, it was easily navigated with a pram and there was also room for two high chairs on our table. The day was a little warm, so we grabbed a table inside, away from the busy Belmont Ave.IMG_1193

The coffee at Café 2TwentyFour is very good – as are the juices. Though it was the giant milkshakes that tempted me, I chickened out on the calorie fest (they are topped with cream, cookies and goodness knows what else) and I chose a refreshing watermelon and strawberry juice instead. Unfortunately, they had run out of melons – whooopps. One of the waitresses dashed over to the shops and appeared a few minutes later with my lusciously sweet juice – it was worth the wait!IMG_1199

Kimee chose the Eggs Benedict (with side of avocado), which is pretty much all she orders when we go out for brunch. Apart from totally loving this dish, it also suits her dairy/gluten intolerances. Add some pulled pork to the dish and she is in heaven! Like many other brunch spots in Perth, Café 2TwentyFour does a eggs bene version with pork. Yay for pulled pork!!IMG_1203

I chose the Chorizo Stack and boy, am I glad that I did – it is a cracker of a dish! The toast was topped with wilted greens, crumbled soft cheese, chorizo and two perfectly runny poached eggs – with some sweet roasted tomatoes on the side. Every component was as tasty as could be.IMG_1207

Kez enjoyed her generous serve of scrumptious pulled beef nachos. It was finished with a dollop of sour cream and a pretty cornflower, adding colour and making it totally insta-worthy!IMG_1200

Café 2TwentyFour is a super little brunch spot. I “mmm’d” and “yum’d” all the way through my chorizo stack – it is absolutely one of the tastiest brekkie dishes I’ve had in a while. I wholeheartedly recommend it and next time I might be brave enough to order a decedent milkshake too!

Harvest Espresso – Vic Park

I have wanted to try Harvest Espresso for a long time. One thing or another has kept me away – it felt like I’d never get there. Finally though I did! I met K, one of my high school mates there.  He’s a chef too, so I was interested to see what he thought of this super popular Vic Park cafe.

IMG_7246We found the little café next to the Vic Park Hotel. The teeny tiny room was very busy for a weekday lunch – though I doubt it could seat more than 30 covers. We were happy to wait a few minutes for a table and in no time we were seated in the window.

I looked over the menu, all the food seemed to fit into the all day brunch category – so it was right up my alley! I spied a great looking mushroom dish on the next table. I figured it must be good, as all six people on the table were eating it! We ordered at the counter.

IMG_7237I’m a bit partial to a chai latte. I picked an iced choc chai from the extensive coffee list. It was pretty dam good.

There was a warm atmosphere in the small café – the only thing I could fault was the constant tap, tap, tap of the chef’s knives chopping away in the kitchen. But given the size of the place, it couldn’t be helped. A plus to the kitchen only being meters away was that all the amazing cooking smalls wafted our way!

They say you eat with your eyes first, well things were looking very tasty indeed!! The plating for both dishes was pretty as a picture.

IMG_7240Chef K was very pleased with his choice of salt cod fritters ($22.50). They sat on a bed of fluffy scrambled eggs garnished with an apple witlof salad, nori, fennel, sour crème. And since it’s such an attractive dish, here’s another pic…IMG_7241

IMG_7242I chose the gourmet mixed mushrooms ($19.50). Two slow poached eggs oozed through the mushrooms sautéed in a tarragon sauce, crunchy croutons and pea shoots. Toasted rye was on the side – perfect for soaking up the delicious creamy sauce. The scrumptious dish was garnished with nasturtiums – edible flowers.

The consensus was that we’d had a very tasty feed! We’d absolutely visit Harvest Espresso again.IMG_7253
